Regenerative Therapies in Aesthetics: What are they and what do they do?
Regenerative therapies have been making their way into the aesthetics specialty space and we are here for it – of course with science-backed technology and research. You may have heard some of the popular buzzwords like “growth factors”, “PRP”, “PRF” and exosomes but with new products and treatments always emerging it’s hard to keep up.
Let’s take a quick and high level look at these quickly rising therapies and treatments.
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)
PRP has been used in regenerative practices for quite some time and has been used to help stimulate healing and repair injuries in soft tissue and joints.
PRP is a biologic therapy that uses a patient’s own blood to spin down and extract the platelets and growth factors. This can be reapplied to the patient topically or injected in areas like the tear trough (undereye), face and scalp.
PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin)
PRF is the second generation to PRP. The process is similar to PRP in that a patient’s blood is drawn and spun down to extract the platelet-rich fibrin and growth factors.
PRF can also be cooled and heated to form a gel product that can be injected similarly to cosmetic fillers. Otherwise, in liquid form the PRF can be applied topically or injected similarly to PRP.
PDGF (Platelet-Derived Growth Factors)
PDGF (our clinic uses Ariessence Pure PDGF) is a pure growth factor that is made using recombinant technology and adding hyaluronic acid (a natural occurring chemical in the body). PDGF is a shelf-stable product that does not require a blood draw from patients.
PDGF can be used both intradermally and topically applied.
Exosomes
Exosomes are cell-derived from plasma (human, plant, or animal) and are the body’s natural first responders to the site in need. The exosomes used in our clinic are (plated) Skin Science and are human derived (do not contain any human by-product).
(plated) Skin Science can be applied topically for both post-procedure and daily care and even has a hair serum.
