Medical Weight Management: What is Semaglutide (GLP-1)?
Did you know that approximately 70% of Americans are overweight or obese according to the National Institute of Health using the Body Mass Index (BMI)? That breaks down to about 1 in 3 adults that are overweight (BMI of 25-29.9) and more than 2 in 5 adults that are obese (BMI of 30+). Being overweight or obese can lead to serious chronic conditions, such as, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. This year our clinic has started offering weight management programs including semaglutide as a treatment option.
What is semaglutide (GLP-1)?
At this point, most people even interested in weightloss have heard of semaglutide under the brand names Wegovy, Ozempic, or Rybelsus. But what is semaglutide and how does it work? Semaglutide is a once weekly injection that can help aid in weight loss.
How does it work?
Semaglutide is a glucagon-like-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that mimics the GLP-1 hormone that naturally occurs in our body. By mimicking this, it helps your brain regulate food intake by suppressing hunger and slowing digestion to help you feel fuller longer (aka minimizing snacking and overeating). When combined with diet and exercise, this treatment can aid in weight loss with studies showing that GLP-1 drugs can contribute to a weight loss of 10.5-15.8 lbs and up to 33.7lbs when combined with lifestyle changes.
Does insurance cover the treatment?
Most patients are finding that insurance will not cover treatment. Our clinic does not take insurance, however we do accept CareCredit.
