Correcting Sun Damage with Chemical Peels
Chemical Peels & Chemical Exfoliation
What is it?
Chemical peels blend acids, exfoliants and retinol applied to the skin in-office to correct signs of aging and discoloration.
What are the Benefits?
Collagen stimulation improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and overall texture.
Corrects discoloration on the surface of the skin from age spots, sun damage, freckles, and melasma (a hormonally influenced darkening of the skin)
Helps kill bacteria to improve acne lesions and scarring
Who is it for?
Chemical peels are an excellent option for all skin types, particularly people with darker skin types or melasma, who are not good candidates for laser correction.
What Can you Expect During the Peel?
Several weeks before the procedure, you'll want to pre-treat nightly with retinol to prepare the skin. The peel is performed in the office, where the aesthetician cleanses the skin and applies the chemical solution. The patient might experience an itching or a warm sensation that usually subsides after a few minutes when the acids self-neutralize into the skin. Any necessary post-care products are applied, and the aesthetician will go over all post-care procedures and usage of post-care products.
What to expect after?
After treatment, you are advised to keep the skin cool and dry for 6-8 hours. Typically, peeling will begin about three days after the treatment is performed, and skin will flake and peel, similar to a sunburn for several days. The skin should always be very well protected with SPF, hats, and minimal sun exposure. Chemical peels may be completed in a series of several treatments to achieve optimal results. Repeat the procedure periodically to maintain results as needed.
